Chris' guidance, you’ll take your street photography to the next level. In the first part of this course, you will receive a brief overview of what street photography is and a short history of the genre starting with the influence of Eugène Atget and Henri Cartier Bresson to mid-century American photographers, such as Garry Winogrand, Helen Levitt and Robert Frank, to name a few. We will then move on to how one “reads” a street photography image and will identify the elements of what makes a street photograph successful. Finally, we will discuss visual cues to keep in the back of your mind when shooting from juxtapositions, tricks of perspective, multiple points of interest, capturing raw emotion, layering, obscuring elements, geometric principles, shadow play, and harnessing the subliminal power of semiotics.

Next, we will take this newly learned knowledge to the streets for 4 hours and apply what was discussed in practice. Attendees can go out on their own or go with Chris Suspect who will provide practical tips for capturing interesting photos and will help to identify situations that may provide fruitful for a successful image.

After we return from the streets, students will be asked to edit their images down to 5 of their favorites. These will then be shown to all the students in the workshop and be open for critique by the group and instructor.

All students who sign up for the workshop will receive in advance a recommended reading list of books that explore the history and philosophy of photography, photography techniques, and street photography photo books of importance. In addition, they will also receive some notes on gear, lenses and flashes that are advantageous to practicing street photography.

Requirements
All students must have a digital camera, a laptop with photo editing software on it, and a thumb drive.
